Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.
The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

Dates: July 21 & 24-28, 2017
Times: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Grades: 6, 7 & 8th Grade
Fee: FREE!

The Mission:

The DFD Career Exploration Camp is an excellent opportunity for young people to learn, experience, and recognize what a future career as a Denver Firefighter could be like. Campers will participate in actual hands-on activities with emergency equipment while performing simulated fire and rescue situations. It is the mission of our instructors to instill participants with team building and leadership skills, along with valuable life lessons, while having fun! Our hope is to inspire these participants to consider working as a Denver Firefighter after their high school and college careers.
Camp Information:
The Career Exploration Camp is dedicated to introducing local young people what it is like to be a Denver Firefighter. This camp is also a great opportunity for DFD Firefighters to help attendees build a sense of teamwork, responsibility and career awareness, while learning First Aid and CPR skills.
Camp will begin each morning at 9am at the Rocky Mountain Fire Academy 5440 Roslyn Building F, Denver, CO 80216. The day will end around 4pm at the same location. Free transportation is available.

Once selected to attend, a parent/guardian must attend a mandatory orientation meeting starting at 6:30 pm on either Tuesday, July 11, or Tuesday, July 18. The orientation meeting will be at the Rocky Mountain Fire Academy, 5440 Roslyn Building #5, Denver, CO 80216, and is anticipated to end around 8pm. Again, orientation attendance of a parent or guardian is mandatory to attend the camp.

Fish in a Tree

"Fans of R.J. Palacio’s Wonder will appreciate this feel-good story of friendship and unconventional smarts.” --Kirkus Reviews

Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she is able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet disruptive distractions.  She is afraid to ask for help; after all, how can you cure dumb? However, her newest teacher Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the trouble maker. With his help, Ally learns not to be so hard on herself and that dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of. As her confidence grows, Ally feels free to be herself and the world starts opening up with possibilities. She discovers that there’s a lot more to her—and to everyone—than a label, and that great minds don’t always think alike.
The author of the beloved One for the Murphys gives readers an emotionally-charged, uplifting novel that will speak to anyone who’s ever thought there was something wrong with them because they didn’t fit in. This paperback edition includes The Sketchbook of Impossible Things and discussion questions.

A New York Times Bestseller!
